Lightbulb Temperature Control dials with integrated temp setting

2021 F-150 *****
2021 F-150 *****

I have an F-250 on order, but one of the things I'll miss about my F-150 is the temperature *****. The temp setting is exactly where it should be, there on the dial. I can imagine that dropping these for the simpler ones on 2022 models and up was a cost savings, but it's certainly a step backward.

Has anyone tried to swap out older ***** on a newer truck? I wonder if the appropriate wiring would still be hiding back there.

There was a thread a while back where someone did just that. It included all the part numbers and FORSCAN codes to make it work. It either in the 23 and up or the 17-22 forum.

My friend's '22 F-550 Lariat has the temp display *****. My '23 F-550 Lariat does not. I thought they would be a cool addition but really low on my list of mods.

The swap has been done in the past. It requires quite a bit, because that HVAC control is intended for the dual zone heating/cooling found in Lariat and above trims, not the single-zone found in XLs and XLTs. The dual zone system is the primary reason I went up to a Lariat instead of the XLT I had been debating.

Note this is for F250-F450, above that I don't know what trim levels get it, or if it is available.

EDIT: Just realized that the Lariat and above (at least for 2025) do NOT show the temp in the dials - it is in the upper corners of the Sync 4 screen. So I'm not sure how you would get that info to display in an XLT, probably has to do with programming with something like ForScan.

I thought I would miss those a lot from my 2021 F150 Platinum. But my 2026 F350 Platinum shows the temps (dual zone) in each of the upper corners of the Sync screen, so it's not really as big of a deal as I thought it would be.

Yeah my comment above I am editing - my Lariat doesn't show the temp in the controls, it's up on the screen. It's our Bronco that has it in the dials.

My 24 Lariat does not show the temp in the dial.

Same with my 26 Lariat, up in the screen. More intuitive to keep it in the dial.

I swapped them on my 25 f350 platinum. I had started a thread earlier this year and another forum member helped figure out the forscan settings. I still have the temps in the corners of the screen but really like having them on the *****.

I guess it's cool. But what is the purpose you are trying to accomplish? I can think of two practical ones:
  • So you can tell what the current temp is set for.
    • Well, as already pointed out, that is shown in the upper outside corners of the main display.
  • So you can see what temp you're setting it for when you go to change it.
    • An overlay shows up, large and in charge, right in the middle of the main screen, when you are turning the dial(s).
In both cases, looking at the main screen takes your eyes off the road less than gazing way down where the dials are.

The temperature shows constantly right on the screen the entire time you’re in it and if you change it, it shows up big on the screen what you’re setting it to. What’s the point of it being on the dial as well? Seems pointless.

Yes, having it both places is not particularly useful. Agreed. It's just a better place for it initailly as it used to be as I see it. Probably not worth the effort to change it, but the thought occured to me anyway.

If you're interested in the design of things in general, consider looking through "The design of everyday things" by Don Norman. I really liked the concepts in there; mainly that using just about anything is best designed when it's just plain intuitive (say, having the temp right on the dial where you change it.) There are some really good examples in there.

Yes the temp is on the screen. I am thinking about this mod. I drive with the sideview cameras on the big screen 99% of the time.
With the temp on the dial, it is one less button for my wife to press when we are together.
