Would appreciate some clarification on my 1996 F150 4.9 starter. Apparently there seems to be two solenoids? One is on the passenger fender and the second one is on the starter itself. I’m getting intermediate starting. I’m wishing to take the red small gauge wire lead from the mounted solenoid on starter wire towhere? Does it run straight to the battery or does it run to the fender solenoid unit? Thank you for your words of wisdom.

The fender mounted solenoid just sends the start signal down to the starter (the small red wire)
That small red wire has a tendency to break off at the connector and still look okay
The small wire also has a tendency to get hard and cause voltage drop
So, check the voltage at that small red wire when the key is in the crank position
It needs to be 10.6volts or above to "pull in" the solenoid
That is the test I do to the problem children
