I'm looking for a way to diagnose a odd transmission issue. Ive seen acouple forums here talking about the same 1-2 shift issue but they never came back to say what fixed it.
So when I put the transmission in drive it slips really bad to the point I can barely get moving in 1st then it slips alittle in 2nd now too. But when I manually shift it into 1st or 2nd there's no slippage at all.
Ive checked fluid level and color no issues. There's no odd sounds. Fluid was changed maybe 10k miles ago, same with torque converter. Assuming transmision is original it has 230k miles on it. I'm hoping its a simple issue with valve body or torque converter but the most work I've ever done on the transmision is replacing the bushing and seal in the front pump where the input shaft goes through it.
i put out feelers in the facebook groups but nobody responded. So im trying here now.
one odd symptom that I dont know if its normal or not is on my scanner I can read torque converter slip value and when in drive at idle with overdrive on it fluctuates between 90 and 60 rpm when I turn overdrive off it jumps up and fluctuates between 300rpm and 600rpm

At idle with the truck not moving the converter slip should be the same as idle speed. Since it isn't, it shows that a clutch is slipping. This isn't an electrical issue, it is time to rebuild or replace the transmission.

thanks mark for the quick reply sounds like its time to order a rebuild kit and manual and try my hand and rebuilding a transmission

Tore valvebody off before dropping the trans and sure enough two feed bolts were loose. Tightened them to spec with new loctite on them, got it back together and drives great. Didn't totally smoke the clutch packs
