I'm in the process of sourcing head and intake manifold bolts for the 360 FE. I've looked at Rockauto but it looks like the head bolts are not available. I'm sure there are folks here who can steer me in the right direction for these. As long as they are proper length, thread, grade, I don't care who makes them... I'm planning on having the machine shop deck the heads and install new valve guides. I'll do the rest.
Why? They aren't TTY like newer stuff. They just get torqued to spec, it keeps them tight. Back in those days, we cleaned the heads and threads, chased the threads in the holes, and unless one got damaged or lost, we reused them. I never knew anyone to replace them. When we removed them, they usually went in a coffee can for safe keeping. BBC or big Pontiac or Ford or if for just standard rebuild or race, they were treated the same.
yea hear you fellas.. The heads on these bolts look bad and while I'm pretty sure I'll get them out ok, with the heads rusted and just not friendly, my gut says a reliable torque setting would be questionable... my hope is to clean them up but want to get my poop in a group before I need them!
yes I agree.. my experience has been lots with head bolts that had to be replaced and special torque, stretch, loosen, retorque... the circus continues... Hopefully me looking at these bolts and thinking they need to be replaced is just me being ****... I guess I'll know better once it's been "off with his head"
So good news. The head bolts are fine. The intake ones will come out but the heads are pretty nasty, I'm going to replace them, and fortunately they're available. The build continues!
