We’re planning to drive our 2022 F-550 down through Central and South America and are trying to figure out whether the GPS tracking feature in FordPass will still work in case of theft.

I’m getting mixed answers from Ford — one person said as long as my phone is synced to FordPass and has cell reception, and the truck is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network, it should work. And there are cases in Brazil where it works. But that it might not work because of the modem being specific to US cellular providers.

What I’m learning from forums and research, is that the modem is configured to operate in the U.S., Canada, and possibly parts of Mexico — and likely not beyond that. One Ford rep mentioned that there might be an aftermarket modem option that could make it work internationally.

My guess is that would mean installing a modem with a SIM card that can be swapped per country, but that’s beyond my expertise.

Has anyone here actually made FordPass GPS tracking work in Mexico / Central / South America, or found a good aftermarket solution for this? I only see people talking about making it work in Europe and Australia so far.

If you’ve done this and can share what hardware you used and the type of shop that handled the install, that would be super helpful.
