Trying to add 4flat wiring to my 2001 E250. Bought and installed the Curt 55344 kit for it. Doesn't work.
Metered the plug. The exposed ground pin is +12v. That ain't right.
So I went back to the van's plug socket. What I think should be the hot is ground.
The orange striped wire on the right is ground. Shouldn't the black be ground? The orange/green striped wire on the right is ground. Shouldn't the black be ground?
File 13 the aftermarket trailer wiring plugs
Find the factory Ford trailer wire plugs
Get an EVTM for a 01 van
Go back to where the original hack into the wires is and start the repairs right there
You need to know a few things
Like
Was it an incomplete vehicle manufacture? (originally sold as a cab and chassis) (those all had trailer tow wiring plugs, for the upfitter, under the seat from FORD)
And
Does it have a factory trailer tow package?
Makes a big difference on how many wires the truck has
Also,
Has anybody ever installed a trailer brake controller?
All that stuff needs to be checked
It was built as a cargo van. There is an aftermarket 4flat hanging in the bumper. No voltage present. There was some device poorly installed under the dash. Truck still started when it was unplugged, so I took it out.
Like Manic said, the trailer wiring looks aftermarket. The wire colors on your plugs do not match any of the OEM trailer wiring options.
The module in the photo looks like an alarm/remote door lock module.
An EVTM and some quality time chasing wires will pay off.
Yes, that's the Curt aftermarket rig I bought at the bottom of each picture, with standard 4flat colors. The plug at the top is the truck's bulb socket. Those black/brown/striped are standard Ford colors, no?
I can't imagine why someone would swap them around at the head end, though.
I expect this truck has seen some things in its 330k miles.
Pretty sure you're right about the module. The only labeled component says shock sensor.
OK, I was looking at OEM trailer wiring, not light socket wiring. Your van may already have OEM trailer wiring that may be a better option. You may have to do some work to find it and connect it at both ends.
