Ford 300 timing issues
Engine has an Amazon HEI distributor, offenhauser 4 barrel and efi exhaust manifolds.
With my timing set around 10° Btdc, I only get about a half crank and engine locks up. I have to advance it a whole bunch before it starts cranking fast, but then need to retard it back to have it run, and once I shut it off it will not crank again unless advanced again.
I've put a vacuum gauge on it and can only seem to get about 18inHg
Runs okay, maybe a slight miss.
Im pretty confident I set cam timing correctly but seems like the only possible cause. Possibly out a tooth?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated
Most of the time when it starts and then stops or "locks" the timing is too far advanced and you retard the timing for it to crank.
It sounds like the distributor was installed 180 off but not back firing up the carb.
I would double check that the motor is on TDC of compression stroke and then check that the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug tower.
Then go back over the firing order to make sure that is right and dont have 2 plug wires swapped.
Now when you look for TDC I would pull the #1 plug and look in to make sure it is at the top and then check if the timing marks are at TDC or off.
It could be if off you are way off on the timing and why it locks when cranking.
Let us know how you make out or if you need more help.
