‘99 F250SD 4WD Supercab. Every time I go from a standstill, I feel a thump like something heavy is rolling backward in the bed of the truck. The Transmission is not slipping. Nothing is in the bed of the truck. No loss of power. Just a thump every time I accelerate off the line. What could it be?
Carrier bearing
U joints
Ring and pinion
Transfer case slack
Put the truck on proper jack stands all checks park, transfer case locked high, low, neutral
Shake the daylights out of the shaft in all directions... from many places on the shaft and at the joints....up, down, forward, aft, rotate clockwise, rotate counter clockwise, force left, force right... find the loose item.
Rotate tires and check for slack or binding and force off axis movements to verify bearings, do the same up front locked and unlocked.
Grease your slip joint, been a few old threads about it, worked on my 02 F350 4x, drove me nuts, I rolled under the whole thing, looking, checking, yanking, pulling wiggling, then I shot up the slip-joint with a good amount of grease, all good.. now I do it abut every other oil change.
