When driving, and as dark approaches, my headlights and gauges lights will turn on appropriately.
Randomly (and more frequently), my headlamps will go off, yet the dash gauges are still lit up and so are the running lights.
This makes me think its not the ambient light sensor.
I'm kinda stumped for ideas, until the other day I wondered if a relay could exhibit this problem. Any other thoughts??
Edit to add
My switch is in the auto position, if I turn it off all interior and exterior lights turn off and when I turn it back on only the interior dash lights come on. Also there is no action between low beam and high beam, the headlamps just don't turn on. At some random point thereafter the headlamps will eventually turn back on and work normal.

Does this happen when sitting still? Almost sounds like a bad ground or connection that is losing contact while driving. Especially since you have no high beams either when they go out.
Okay, that narrows it down to the automatic light sensing circuit. Now to determine if they are turning off as commanded or if there's a broken wire somewhere.
