I am hoping someone can easily identify what model the stripped tailgate in the photo may fit? It measures approximately 54.5" x 21" My '54 F100 tailgate sits alongside in second photo as a comparison.
Spent part of the day stripping the "replacement tailgate" I've had for 10 years to just realize it ain't going to work.....smile. Thx, tim

Reason: clairty
I have a tailgate from a 1978 Ford stepside that looks exactly like the tailgate on a 1954. It measures 54 7/8" wide and 20 3/4" tall.
The bed on a 73-79 stepside looks very much like a 1954 bed except the top rail is flat instead of angled, there are slight inner wheel wells and the bed and tailgate is a few inches wider. I have a 1978 bed on my 55 and no one ever notices
Ishort and bigwin56f100, thank you both for your reply's they are appreciated!
I understand the F100 gate remained the same for about 20 years. I might guess the F250 gate may have had a much longer run as Ishort's dimensions match up to this gate and I am fairly confident this gate came off a 50's truck.

the 53-72 beds have angled tops Called a "hay bed" the reintroduction of the flair side beds in the mid 70s have a flat top to the bed. This makes the bed sides taller on the flat top beds. Also the later beds have built in mini wheel tubs. That addition was required as the beds are wider than that of the 53-72 beds
yes the later beds used the same gate as the 53-72 8' beds
