The clear shield would be a good option for light use. I had some clear shield added to the tops of my saddle bags on my Roadking. It keeps me from scuffing the paint when I accidentally drag a toe across them.

Another option would be clear tintable spray on bedliner (i think you add base coat color to the liquid bedliner), won't look as nice as the plastic film but it would put up with some HD use.....
