Ground goes behind Cyl No 4 somewhere, just checked mine. Could not see where, sorry.

Perhaps a stud on the back of the head or cam cover stud?

Ah, I bet that's it. I recall now there's a stud where that heater hose bracket attaches to the back of the pass. side head. I still have it up on jack stands, so I should be able to get at it from underneath. Thanks!

I remember I removed it just before I pulled the engine, but I can't remember what it was connected to. I searched the service manual and didn't see and sort of ground circuit diagram. From a picture I took at the start of this project, I can see it tucks under the cowl and run over towards the driver's side, but I can't see it after that. Any help there would be appreciated. Hopefully I can't get this 100% complete soon.
Have you found where this braid ground goes? If not I can get a photo this evening for you. If I remember correctly it's in the valley. I am currently replacing pass head on my 5.4. I stopped working on it lately but I've got to get back to it. I left engine in the truck and pulled the accessories off to get to the head. It wasn't too bad to get to. Definitely not fun though, and my engine is not as clean as yours.

I'm pretty sure that ground goes to this stud here

The problem I found is that once the engine is back in and the intake manifold in place, there's no way to get your hand on it; even from underneath, there's just not enough room. I attached it to one of the screws that holds down the throttle cable and cruise control bracket. I didn't feel like taking the cover back off, but you can see where it goes here

So that said, it's all back together. I just need to talk my wife into coming out to the pole barn to help me get the hood back on.

I took it for a very brief drive (without the hood) and the engine sounds and runs just fine, although I was pretty light on the gas. Turns out I'm still about a quart and a half low of ATF, so back to the store for that tomorrow. The only issue I was seeing is that the heat never got more than barely warm even though the temp gage made it to half way. The upper hose was hot, so probably just some air trapped in the heater lines that should hopefully work its way out on a longer drive.

Oh, I almost forgot. That coolant leak was because I bought the wrong gasket for the oil filter adapter. There's no way this would have worked.

I picked up the correct one at my local Napa. The right one is on the top, the one that leaked is on the bottom. They look pretty close

But when you lay one on top of the other, it becomes apparent they're not the same

Well hopefully that's the worst of my troubles. Almost done with this project that took way too long.

Ah the Pen15 gasket, mine was leaking quite a bit of oil on the Screw. Very messy job swapping that thing, Expedition needs it too.

Did you have the heads rebuilt or do anything to them while apart?

Good to see the project completed.

No, although in hindsight I probably should have at least had them checked for flatness. I was in sort of a get it finished state of mind. I just cleaned them up real well, in addition to doing the valve guide seals, since the gasket kit came with them.

There were a few spots at the coolant passages where there was some erosion of the metal. For instance:

I cleaned those spots up with carb cleaner and a wire brush, then filled them in with JB weld and filed them flat. I don't know if that will hold up long term, but it has to be better than just leaving it. I checked those areas with a straight edge, so you think I would have remembered the check the entire cylinder head, but oh well. It's finished now. I took it to work this morning and have about 40 miles on it after getting home. The heat works, no leaks, no codes (there weren't any before), and it runs perfectly so I'm going to call it job complete. Thanks again to anyone who gave me some pointers.

That is as bad as I've seen in 40+ years
The JB weld should work for a while
