head gasket replacement

Need to replace the head gaskets on my 5.4 triton. One of the mechanics I was trying to get a quote from said he wouldn't replace them on an engine with 177000 miles. He says rebuilt or replace the engine. I have not been told this by any of the other mechanics I have talked too nore have I heard of it on any of the posts I have read. Have any of you heard of this.

What year 5,4 is it? The 2V motors are good for 350K.

It is a 1999 2v

Pull the heads get them decked and reinstall with new gaskets. Shell go another 160k no problem

No doubt. These old 2v's are fantastic engines. When you pull the heads, install some new lash adjusters also. Now is a good time to do some stainless exhaust manifold hardware too.

Yeah, I get the guy's perspective on it...lots of people think that engine is close to to the end of its life.

The modular V8s are known for lasting forever when maintained, though. We routinely see people getting 300K+ on them. I think it would be worth a set of head gaskets as long as the engine is in good shape otherwise.
