DIY rockers replacement

Anyone have tips? It looks like a full set is around $500. I'm decently handy but don't have any body work or professional welding experience. But I am ok with just using bed liner or similar as the finish coat. I may bolt on new running boards for a bit but the rockers are rusting away from the inside out. Why does Ford leave holes in the inner panels that load with dust and moisture? Any YouTube videos or member tutorials? Thanks. 270K miles on the V10.

Relatively easy, but will take a bit of time. I used a spot weld cutter from harbor freight to cut the spot welds out along with a 1/4" right angle drill. There are a few that need that unless you take the door off. Get a few of the cutters as they aren't high quality. they do work though. I used 3M 2 part body panel adhesive to secure them back and it worked great. That stuff is tough.

Did you weld or rivet? Any videos or pictures? I've never done any body work but because of where they are I'm thinking I have some leeway as it's not that visible.

I have a Hobart 190. It seems auto body would be best with gas vs flux core?

Guess the cost to buy a tank/gas can be my reward for saving $K in shop labor!

I removed the lower bolt and clip nut from the running board bracket. Going to put some paint on the outside rocker and bolt the brackets back on. Maybe I get a couple of years before it needs a decision. DIY the rockers or sell it. I only drive 5k a year and park it in the garage.

Rocker on driver side rear dog leg has 4" hole. Same area on passenger side has smaller hole along the bottom side (because I pushed it through when digging out mud trapped inside).

Sad that $100 better materials weren't used or at least paint and seal off the inside.

Depends on if you are doing inners or just outers. Neither are tough but it is time consuming. If you have to do inners you better start thinking about the body supports, may have to diy fab some replacements. Again not difficult but some macguyvering may be required. A mig welder with gas will be your friend. I picked up a Miller on a black Friday sale for under 200 for when I did mine a few years ago.

You can also use body panel adhesive. I did mine with rivets and panel adhesive.

Yeah the inners have several brackets diagonally. I guess those would need to be removed, the rockers replaced, and then the brackets welded back into place. That's a good point I didn't look carefully enough to see if the inners are rotted or if it's just the outers, but both of them seem to join down at the pinch weld and that's where most of the rust is.

And those diagonal pieces have other lines attached to them.

Body panel adhesive only. That's for an outer. I welded sheet metal in place on one inner.

There are pictures in my build thread. I'll see if I can point you to the post.

Here's the post in my thread:

There's probably more in there, but that's the start.
