This flattie was posted on my local FB Marketplace for $50. The seller states it's stuck. I'm not interested in buying it just curious, is this a Ford? The waterpumps look strange to me. The back of the engine look Ford to me. The rear looks like a pre-'48 while the front had what kind of looks like post 48. The seller said it came out of a car he bought.
Actually, I believe it to be the early 21 stud flathead from 32-36. The V8-60 had the center head water outlet and only 17 head studs. The model 40 (part number prefix) is from 1933, predating the V8-60, which was introduced in 1937 and used thru 1940 in the US. The 1942 date code identifies that head as a later service replacement part. Flathead Specifications for 60hp
Wayne nailed it. I have a couple under the workbench - one complete but the second one had a con rod try to go thru the block.
The 21 stud engines are pretty much a curiosity - most traditional hotrod builders seem to prefer the 24 stud 59AB or later 24 bolt 8BA.
From memory a little more trivia: 32 - 35/6 used babbitt for bearings. 36 was a crossover year with some receiving loose bearings (LB). 37 on all have standard shell or loose bearings.
