Hi - I'm replacing my EGR valve on my new to me 1996 f150 w/ 5.0 and there is a ground wire currently running from the firewall to one bolt on the EGR valve. This doesn't see correct. It's on the outside of the EGR which has a gasket between it and the aluminum intake. Don't think that would work as a proper ground for anything (but correct me if i'm wrong). Where should this wire be attached to? From other engine bays I've seen, it appears it runs from the firewall down behind the back of the engine. Maybe it's bolted to the back of the engine block somewhere? Thanks!
On 5.8L engines I have seen that ground lug tied to the upper intake manifold support bracket like this example below:
Where yours is tied is fine IMHO.
5.0L engines are the same way. The ground wire went to the stud for the upper plenum support bracket. Maybe it was removed and then the person forgot where it went so the EGR bolt was used.
The gasket is irrelevant. The bolt is screwed into the manifold so it would ground through the bolt.
I'm in that group where you forget where something goes after it's been apart awhile. I put mine onto the throttle cable plate that sits on top of the manifold. I expect it's important to have, but I don't know what purpose it serves specifically.
On the 5.0 You'll find the main block ground connected near the lower front of the engine on the passenger side. This is the one the starter current flows through. It's a heavier cable that is also bolted to the frame and goes on up to the negative post on the battery.
