Flare side bed questions

I’m looking at a Flareside (step side if you prefer) bed for my 79 project. The top of the bedsides is angled not flat. Was 78/79 the only years of the flat tops?
was it possibly a all years dent side deal?
not sure on the bumps and earlier trucks.
I’ve only seen the flat tops on 78-79’s myself.

The angled top bedside is definitely for an earlier truck than a ‘79. I believe they made the change around 76 or 77 but I may be wrong on that. Otherwise the bed is more or less the same unless it’s pre 1964, those get a bit different.

I believe that there was a model year with no available Flareside bed, somewhere in the mid-to-late '70s - between the older and newer bedsides.

With no tailgate, it could be anything from a '53 to '72. I don't believe there was a Flareside initially offered when they went from the bumpside to the dentside. In '76 the short bed Flareside returned, no t iwth slightly higher bedsides, the tailgate from the longbed Flaresides, and flat tops. The same boxes (not accounting for where the holes were drilled to mount the fenders) and tailgates were used through 1987, with new style fiberglass fenders for 1980-86, then one year only fiberglass rear fenders for 1987. '76-79 Flareside beds are tough to find. And tailgates can be even tougher,

The little stubby running boards ahead of the fenders say 57-72. That's when they made the cab wider where the early trucks had the narrow cab and long running boards between the front and rear fenders.

Also, the reason for the change of the short Flareside bed on bumpside, was due to a 2" increase in wheelbase length. So if you put a '57-'72 bed on it, there would be a larger gap between the bed and the cab than there should be. 2" doesn't sound like a lot, until you see it.

I think that Bump and Dent beds are the same size, and will interchange directly, other than frame spacing for a Highboy.

I believe the Dent's extra two inches are in the doors and the rear of the cab.

By looking here, it shows the '76-'79 bed to be 80" long.

Also, the '76-'79 bed is a few inches wider. Short and long bed Flaresides are now the same width. As you can see in the chart below, there are dimensions for '67-'72s.

78 inches was the standard length of the flareside bed from 1942 to '72. The basic box is the same from 53-72 with a difference in fender location after 57. Ford created a whole different bed for the revival of flareside dents in '76. It's taller and wider than the older ones. So if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it.

nothing about this truck is original. Just wanting something that will fit width wise. and look like it belongs.
long bed truck so it can be shortened exactly however much it needs.

thank you sir. Those new beds are catching my attention. So much work saved over restoring an old bed.
