I bought a 2004 ford f250 super duty 5.4 v8 2v truck from someone with a blown headgasket, I put the new engine in and it started up and sounds fine but im getting no power to my instrument cluster, the only thing it shows is when I turn my head lights on it lights up but no needles work and no other light come on except when using the brights and turn signals these show the icons on my cluster, I checked all the fuses there all good. Also fuse 35 I unplugged because it kept my cab light on and it wouldn't turn off but I plugged it in just to see if the cluster would work and it did not, I checked the voltage going to the wires connected on the ignition switch with the key turned to on and most of them are 12v except one black and red wire was only getting 3v im assuming this is feeding my cluster, I don't know why its only getting 3 volts tho.
I did notice one of my fuses was supposed to be a 20 but theres was a 15 in its place I switched it to a 20 and my cab light is functioning properly even tho the fuse i changed wasn't supposed to affect the cab light (it was fuse 38) and also the wire at the ignition switch is now reading 12v I checked continuity from that wire that now reads 12v and to the ground for the cluster that is behind the the small trim pannel and the hood latch and its 65 ohms, also I checked continuity from the negative battery terminals to the ground wires in the engine bay and most were good except the ground wire closest to my headlight on the driver side was reading 1 ohm everything else was in normal range tho
Here is a link to the wiring diagrams. Your cluster uses a Can Bus to get information from the PCM. If this bus is not working there will be no speedometer, tachometer , coolant temp and several other warning lights (see the list on the right side of the first drawing).
Use the diagrams to verify voltages. Check the integrity of the Can Bus wires.
