Just picked up this 12 f250 with trans issues I know that these have issues with shift solenoids going out but I don't know how to tell it trys to skip gears but when I get up to speed it just loses everything until I pull over and shut it off and turn it back on. I also smelled the trans fluid and it smells burnt which leads me to believe the trans is smoked. I don't know if that could be from the guy not changing fluid or something.
Sounds as if your clutches and steels are burnt. When the fluid temp is cool they will grab but when the fluid gets to temp and less viscous they will fail. A trans rebuild is definitely in your future.
That's what I thought to but I figured since I had another valve body I'd try it and got it swapped and programmed 1 was solid 2 was solid 2-3 shift sluggish 3 was solid 3-4 shift sluggish 4 was solid but it wouldn't shift out of fourth and shift to reverse was sluggish so this leads me to believe it's the valve body and the one in the other trans was just on its way out. Am I correct in this thinking or just wasting time and money?
If you have a reputable transmission shop near by bring them your valve body and have them do a vacuum test on it. It will give you an idea if the valve body is properly sealing or if you have bore wear.
I don't have any good shops near me but I'm thinking more solenoids than valve body but it's just easier to change the whole valve body with the solenoids in it than to change just the solenoids
That trans is pretty bullet proof. IDK if it is related to the 4r75 in our Expedition, but that thing crapped the bed and it was the lead frame connector. Nothing to do at all mechanicals of the transmission. I replaced lead frame and all is well again.
How many miles? Problem buying a used truck is you don't always know the maintenance of said truck. How many times was the fluid dropped and replaced? Filter changes? Crazy the Ford says 150k miles on trans fluid. Eff that... mine has 141k miles and will get her 4th fluid drop and fill, and 3rd filter change. I let it go longer this time than I'd have liked but its still shifting good. I just daily drive mine. Overkill? Maybe but fluid and filters are a lot cheaper than trans parts and service.
Truck has 250,000 just put a refurbished valve body and solenoids in it now has all 6 gear but 2-3 and 3-4 shift are still slow i only took it for a short test drive so maybe it hasn't finished relearning yet I have no idea
