Hey guys, I don't own a Ranger, but I happened to be lurking around in here (An Explorer is close enough isn't it?) and I noticed one person mentioned a 2.3 Duratec in his Ranger. When did the old HSC 2.3 get taken out? I am really behind on my Ranger knowledge. The Vulcan even is mated to the 5R now? What are the current engines and transmission options in the Ranger? I still think the Vulcan Ranger uses the 4-speed auto, and only recently found out the Edge has the great 4.0 SOHC option.
Not sure when the latest 2.3 was introduced, but I know the lineup looks like this:
2.3 4cyl, 3.0 V6, 3.0 Flex-Fuel V6, 4.0 SOHC.
The 4.0 SOHC is available in the SuperCab XLT, FX4, and Edge. No 4.0 in the Reg cabs. No 5spd manual trans. with the 4.0.
All other engines mated to either 5spd Auto or 5spd Manual. The Auto has not had any major problems that I am aware of, no matter which engine it is paired with.

See that's the thing...I know I heard somewhere that the SOHC 4.0 had a manual bolted to it. The OHV 4.0 which was the Explorer base motor until 2001 was kept around for the sole reason that it was the only motor to offer the M5OD.
Yes, I know the auto is a good transmission. I have your exact motor/trans setup and it has done good for me in the past 116K miles.
Also, what is a 2.5 4-cylinder? I heard that mentioned on here also, but I've never even heard of a Ford motor with that displacement. Not unless they mean the 2.5 V-6 Duratec...
I think the "new" I4 2.3L Duretc was first introduced in the 2001 or 2002 Ranger. It's also used, or going to be used, in several other Ford and Mazda vehicles. It can be tuned to each application. A good article on the engine itself is here:
