Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge diesel sound levels:

This was sent to me by a very good friend, I submit it for a great laugh................as to the lack of quietness (haha) about the 6.0. Now these are real numbers so read and heed.

It seems our 6.0 really is quiet

My son and I test drove three new diesels tonight and took all the readings with the same calibrated sound meter (slow setting). All readings were taken with A/C and stereo off, no conversation. Outside readings were taken 10' directly in front of truck and 25' away at a 45 degree angle, about where my neighbor's bedroom window is. Readings on my 2001 F-250 Crew Cab V-10 gasser were included for comparison. All vehicles were crew cab, and built within the last six weeks. From what I can tell, the F-250 still had split shot injection, raising idle 100 RPM or more and there was a noticable change in the tone of the enging noise. The temp was 59 deg, humidity 60%, if that matters.

Ford F-250 6.0L PowerStroke Diesel (no hood insulation)
Inside @ idle 52 db
Inside @ 70 MPH 68 db
Outside 25' @ 45 deg 62 db
Outside 10' @ 0 deg. 72 db

Chevrolet Sierra 2500HD 6.6L Duramax Diesel(hood insulation)
Inside @ idle 54 db
Inside @ 70 MPH 68 db
Outside 25' @ 45 deg 65 db
Outside 10' @ 0 deg. 71 db

Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L Cummins HO Diesel (no hood insulation)
Inside @ idle 58 db
Inside @ 70 MPH 70 db
Outside 25' @ 45 deg 66 db
Outside 10' @ 0 deg. 69 db

Ford F-250 6.8L Triton V-10 (2001, mine)
Inside @ idle 45 db
Inside @ 70 MPH 68 db
Outside 25' @ 45 deg 58 db
Outside 10' @ 0 deg. 63 db

I said once that I thought my 10 was as loud as my 6.0L at highway speeds. Someone cried sha-nan-agains. Looks like I could have been right.

Hey Tim,

Great work!!!

I here Ford has an opening in their engineering department. They need someone that actually knows how to test and understand a diesel truck.

So... you interested? You get your choice of a company truck to drive... problem is it's one of the buy-back trucks from early '03.

Great info and to bad we never see this kind of comparison and "makes you feel good to own a Ford 6.0L" info from Ford!!

Thanks,

Remember the old saying "Don't confuse me with facts!" and "Perception is reality.". I work with a guy who has a couple of trucks on his family ranch. He calls them the goats (Ram). He made a comment to me about how quiet my truck is. Even though it is louder now with PI gone, it is still quieter than the other diesels.

Were all the idle speeds the same? The engines are going to have different freq levels at different rpm, so for a fair comparison all idle speeds would have to remain the same. The best part of the data I see is the 70 mph test. Would have to have a really!! good ear to pick up a 2 db difference. With the new Cummins HO and revised duramax I would say they are dead even on noise level. Unless Ford ontinues to take away PI. Have the new HO Cummins running in a dyno cell, and that thing is quiet! period!. What an improvement over the old B engine. Still going with the Ford to get a better trans and truck. Love the Cummins, but the Dodge truck is a piece of s*#$t.

PSD 4x4 SC XLT wedgewood blue/silver on order.

Interesting Test

Thanks for bringing that post over Tim

Just to clarify ..The 250 having "split shot Injection" Means it still had PI enabled...Is that correct?

Yes. As a side note I also tested my 04/04 X (you can find the link on the same thread, same username). The results were almost identical. An interesting point is that when tested just above the oil filter, the dB increase between PI on and off was just over the ford advertised 3 dB.

Rather than dig all this back up, folks should go read the post over at TDS.

The test only says at idle, it does not say that they were tested at the same RPM. I'd have think they'd have noted that if it was the case.

It also didn't mention what rpm they were at 70mph.

Oh and you forgot to mention how much better your burb or dmax would have done. You know jeb I bet if we hooked up and had a brew we would get along great. Ive had some of the most heated arguments with some of my BEST friends. And no I'm not following you around, I just happen to read and post the same places you do.

Team FTE,
Wed. morning it was 17 degrees here in El Paso, started the truck to warm up. Went inside the apartment to get the gear for the day and heard this racket coming from the parking lot. I said to my self...... ohhhhhhhhhh here we go, the shoe has just fallin! Went out and the PSD was just fine!!!!! wheeewwwwwwwww The racket I heard was a Cummings; rumblin, stumblin, bumblin it's way on by. Nothing against the Dodges, Dad has one(gasser), but the PSD is by far much quietier than the Ram. Haven't been around the bowties yet to compare.
Later

Hope every one has a Super Sunday and your team wins!
