Hey guys, this is my first post here, and I need some help/thoughts/opinions. This may get long, but I want to be thorough!
I have a 2022 6.2, back in June, on a record setting 100 degree day, I was towing my roughly 6000lb boat on the highway, flat ground, in a straight away. I believe I was just coasting along when the truck began to “buck”. I thought I had trailer issues, but a quick look in the mirrors showed everything was fine. I tried to accelerate, but I had nothing. I saw the transmission gear readout blinking at 4 and all I could do was coast. I got onto the shoulder and had just enough momentum to turn onto a side street and then the truck shut off on its own. I tried to restart it, but it just cranked and wouldn’t start. I waited about a minute and tried again, it started right up, and ran fine for the remaining 80 mile trip home.
The truck had about 57,000 miles on it, so the next day I called my local dealer, not the dealer I bought it from. I figured my powertrain warranty is about up, I should get it checked out. I was thinking possible transmission issue since I saw it blinking at 4. I dropped it off at the dealer, ran fine there, no check engine light or anything and waited with it. Hour later my service advisor tells me that the technician cannot find any issue, but it is throwing a code that says I need a new y-pipe assembly to the tune of $4000. Obviously I wasn’t happy, 3 year old truck, 60,000 miles, wtf! Advisor can’t really tell me anything, but I’m not getting it fixed. I pay the $178 diagnostic fee, get in my truck and now the check engine light is on! I go to the advisor, she says they didn’t make it come on, only way to get it off is to put the new y pipe on, I leave frustrated.
Next day I reach out to the service manager, that really doesn’t get me anywhere. I’m emissions exempt in PA, I figure maybe I get aftermarket y pipe put on a whole lot cheaper soon. I had the codes (4020 & 4030) cleared by my cousin, but they came back quickly. Truck seems to idle a little rough, but clears right up when I give it some gas. Exhaust does seem to smell a lot, but it is running ok. Check engine light bothers me though, I’m deciding what I want to do.
Then this fuel pump recall comes out (my vin does qualify). They say the engine can stall. They say it is more likely when the weather is hot. They say the check engine light may come on. What do you guys think, is this my issue? It did start back up, and runs okay now. Will it happen again? Did this fuel pump cause the catalytic converter to go bad? If it did, then what?
What are your thoughts? Where would you guys go from here? I know this is my first post, but I certainly appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks!
The only way to know for sure is to get the recall done and have the fuel pump replaced. If the engine light keeps coming back after being cleared then it could be something else, not sure why a y-pipe would cause an engine light though.
Thanks for the reply! I definitely plan to get the recall work done, when it is available. The y pipe contains the catalytic converters, it is serviced as one unit.
A fuel flow failure will generate a code….if your service dept can’t rule out malfunctions based on existing or no existing codes the mechanics either need retraining on reading their scripted trouble shooting menus or find another line of work.
Thanks for the reply! I would have thought the truck shutting down on its own and then not wanting to start again would have thrown some sort of code. That is the main reason I took it to the dealership. It’s crazy to me that I take it there with no CEL and an hour later the CEL is on and I need a $4000 catalytic converter assembly. The only code history is 4020 and 4030, and that was verified by me.
Do you think these fuel pumps are having catastrophic failure or is intermittent failure on an extremely hot day possible?
For what it's worth, I got my letter today for the fuel pump recall. No fix yet, but the letter says: "Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving your vehicle under this safety recall." It also says "Prior to fuel pump failure, you may experience poor engine performance (misfiring or running rough), a check engine light, or a reduction in power." Hopefully we get some warning before it happens, and they get a fix figured out soon. To each his own, but we have a three week RV trip soon, and I'm not planning to cancel it based on this.
