The amp gauge in my 93 350 7.5 just started fluctuating. It is on the higher end or the normal markings and just bouncing almost non stop . I noticed the dash lights and dome light had slight flickering. I drove 100 miles homes today and it ran fine but bounced most of the way. When I got home I put the multimeter on it and am getting 14.7-15.3 volts at the battery when it's bouncing. Seems kinda high. I have checked all my battery cables and grounds and they are tight. The cables themselves were replaced with new cable last winter. Anyone know whats going on or what I can check? Battery is also near new. Thanks
The regulator/alternator is packing it in. 15V is really high.
Possibly the battery as well. If the battery is 4-5 years old, get a new one, after you service/replace the alternator.
A 1993 truck does not have an ammeter from the factory. Are you talking about the factory volt meter? Or did you add an aftermarket ammeter?
Sorry, my mistake you are correct. Im talking the factory gauge to indicate charging. With the word "normal" no numbers on it. Its bouncing up at the A and past the L in normal.....which in this case is not normal. It typically is pretty static reading straight down on the R or M.
The battery is only a year old, as I replaced that with a good quality one when I replaced all the cables. But currently with the needle of the gauge bouncing I'm reading about 15 volts on the battery. I'm thinking there's something wrong with the alternator but I don't know. I believe the voltage regulator on this is internal to the alternator and wondering if that could be it or if I'm missing something.
I don't think you're missing anything. Your symptoms all point to a regulator not regulating like it should. If its internal with the alternator, swap it out for a good reman unit and see what happens.

This gauge?
The one with the numbers 8 -18 to indicate voltage?
My EB has an ammeter. It shows charging and discharging and at what rate

Yes that's the gauge. I misspoke or mistyped I guess. Going to see about a replacement alternator tomorrow. Thanks for the guidance. Hopefully that will do the trick.
