oops -- forgot engine plate -- do i *really* need it?
After a year of rebuilding and diddling, I'm finally putting my new engine back into the truck (nicely warmed over 390).
I dropped it in this morning and all of the alignments of bolts, converter, and all that were going really well.
Unfortunately, I forgot to put the engine plate between the block and C6. You know, it's that 16 gauge piece of sheetmetal that sandwiches between the block and bellhousing.
My question is, do I really need it? What are the risks of leaving it out?
I was afraid of that.
I have a funny feeling that I'll have to put it in.
Fortunately, it's only a couple of hours.
I might as well just get to it.
Here I go.
Wish me luck.

That's a bummer but you made the right choice Matt. That plate spaces back the torque converter and starter for proper alignment. I know it's not much but without it you risk ruining the front pump and grinding the ring gear.
