im putting a 302 into my truck 66 f100
the engine i took out was a 240 3-speed 6 banger there was a shime plate (if that is the correct name for it?)between the trans and block .
now a am useing a 3 speed/od man trans had to get the 157 tooth flywheel and bellhousing im looking for the shim plate but when i call around they are telling me i dont need one is that the case and if so why does the six use one and not the 302.
any help appr. thanx paul
Both the 240 and the 302 use an engine rear plate, but they are not interchangeable. The correct one for a 302 is half the size of the one for a 240, and is somewhat shaped like a half moon, and has a cutout for the starter. The 302 plate bolts to the block, the crankshaft fits through a round hole in the plate.

Bill, I think you accidentally typed 302 in place of 240 in your post.
Both 240/300 I-6's used the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 302 V-8's, so if the bellhousing fits either, then the plate should as well. The auto transmissions, needed a removeable cover so that the torque converter nuts could be removed, but all the manual tranmissions I have seen behind these engines had a full plate. Somebody correct me if this is not correct.

I did? Where?? Regardless, the plates are different part numbers and are shaped completly different. The 240 is a full plate, the 302 is half moon shaped and barely covers the top of the crank. Standard transmission.

Thanks for correcting me, Bill. I did not mean to imply an error on your part, but only wanted to say that the hole-pattern in either plate was the same. I guess you could cut the bottom off a full plate if you wanted it to be more correct, by the book.
I notice your 302 number is a D0..., so the factory must have used that as the replacement for older plates on the 302's. I know I have seen full-plates on some of these engines - perhaps 260's or 289's.
Ford put plates between the bellhousing & block on most (all?) 302's. There is probably enough tolerance to put it together with or without the plate. I still think you can use the plate you have from your six, either as it is or with the bottom cut off. Others may be able to say that they have left the plate out with no problem, but I have always put them back in.
