Emergency Help NEEDED - Selector Switch Issue?
Here's the issue.
1.) I replaced the switch as seen in the tech folder. However, I didn't remove the cable at all. Just removed the switch from the arm. The old one is now destroyed.
2.) When I went to start the truck I get lights on the dash (Check Gage, Batt., 4x4, Low Range, ABS) These go off after a second but the truck won't start.
3.) I have done a bunch of other work on the front axle i.e. hubs, ball joints etc. Part of my repairs was to replace the master cylinder. I hooked up the brake switch and have verified the truck started after that work was done.
4.) When I have the selector switch bolted in the gear shifter won't move at all. when I unbolt the switch the shifter works but I still can not start the truck.
HELP! I'm desperate, We're supposed to leave town tomorrow and at this point I'm dead in the water.
Thanks!
If not cranking:
2. Set the e-brake and/or have a helper sit in the seat and hold the brakes down
3. Key in Run position
DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE in case it lurches forwards.
4. Use a screwdriver/wrench and jumper across the starter solenoid. it's on the passenger fender, midway down (behind battery). has 2 big posts with power cables running to it
If the vehicle lurches, you are in gear and need to manually reposition it to Park.
I suspect you either installed the switch wrong and or you introduced a different fault while doing all the work. The truck should start and be drivable based on what you're saying. Since the shifter won't move while connected to the switch, it almost seems like you may have the trans in 1st gear manually. Would explain why the shift lever won't move when connected. and why the truck won't start.
either way, jumpering the solenoid will get you started and allow for driving the rig until you can figure the issue out.
Yeah, it won't crank at all. The only thing I get is the vacuum pump turns on and the lights on the dash. Then nothing.
I also didn't mention earlier that the shift cable did move and click the trans a couple times while I was getting the old switch off so I bet you are right. It may have slipped into a different gear.
So to clarify, its possible to have the transmission in a different gear than the indicator says on the dash? If so, how do I "manually reposition it to park"?
the shifter is just a visual indication. It serves no other purpose besides selecting gear. The electronics all operate based off the switch on trans
