Getting ready to refill and put the cover back on after changing the diff fluid today and just noticed these 2 rings sticking out. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, they don't seem to be broken. Any idea if these spacers (I think that's what they are) are not in the right place or should I not worry and just send it?
They look like they may be so far out as to not even go around the axle.
If the axle is setup correctly there is far too much pressure between the race and the case for that to ever happen. I would suspect that there is a bearing worn allowing the race to become loose and the shims to slip. I haven't touched a 10.5 in a long time, I can't even say for sure that there should be shims in that location.
There are 3 of those shim rings...the one in the middle is seated correctly. Its the outer 2 that are sticking out....it makes no sense to me. Not even sure how I would get them put back in place.
I haven't worked on a differential before.
Not sure how long its been like this, but what would some symptoms be? It doesn't have any obvious side effects when I drive it. The gasket was leaking so I decided to change the fluid, which was pretty dark, and when I went to clean the mating surfaces for a gasket, I saw these.
I am planning to put in a TrueTrac and a Banks diff cover in a few months....just wondering if there are any downsides to just putting this back together now. Who knows how long its been like this.
I have never worked on a diff, and I know there are a lot of tiny adjustments made to get the lash right....which I don't know how to do, so I will have to take it to a shop anyway.
Well, if your planning on having the diff replaced anyways I'd run it as is until then. Budget for carrier bearings and gears at the same time. The gears may still be OK but I wouldn't trust the bearings.

Never put off until tomorrow that which should be done today.
The TruTrac doesn't require the pinion to be removed, so it as simple as swapping the gear, tone ring, press on new carrier bearings and put it in...measure the backlash and adjust.
I just ordered the Eaton Detroit Truetrac part 915A550....I will plan on having anything that got messed up replaced.
I expect to add new races and bearings as well. Looks like I will be switching over to 80W-90 gear oil for the rear, unless 75W-90 will work as well.
Funny, but I have not noticed anything odd nor heard anything unusual...and I have been towing a dump trailer and 16' dovetail regularly since April. Now I wonder how long its been like that.
Fluids from rear and especially the front diffs were pretty dark...glad I decided to take on the project, but it sucks that its going to take more than fluids now. LOL
