Disconnecting ECM

I've heard it before but wondered if there was any truth to it - I installed a catback flowmaster muffler exiting straight back out two 3" pipes effectively replacing the stock exhaust. Sounds great. Should I really disco my negative cable and reset the ECM after installing the freer flowing exhaust? I always thought the engine computer reacted to sensor input on the fly - just wondering....

Disconnecting ECM

Mike, I'm pretty sure that Flowmaster has it in their instructions to disconnect the battery ground, if I'm not mistaken. I put one on mine and I did disconnect the ground. Don't know if it makes a diff but better to go by the book.

The only reason they put that step in the instructions is to keep an unforseen accident from occuring. Thus reducing the liabillity on their end. As long as you don't have problems with the install on none eletrical part installation there should be no reason to disconnect the batt terminal.

This is a very good idea when installing components that hook to the electrical system of the truck.

Hope this help!

Disconnecting ECM

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-02 AT 08:32 PM (EST)]If you are instructed to disconnect the neg.cable on the battery,it is probably,(as stated before),for safety reasons. It is possible to accidentally crank the engine,etc..with the battery still hooked up by accidentally putting a wrench where it doesn't belong.
On that note,on a neg.ground system you always want to disconnect the negative battery cable first and reconnect the negative battery cable last. That way if you touch the wrench to ground,(the vehicle chassis), while disconnecting or reconnecting either the neg. or pos. side of the battery it will not arc and cause a potential explosive situation.

In my experience,if your computer needs to adjust the fuel mixture because of your exhaust it will do it within a couple of hours of drive time.

Disconnecting ECM

You guys are the best - thanks for the insight - I disco'd the neg cable anyway this afternoon and reprogrammed my stereo shortly thereafter :P

I don't expect a difference in mileage or power, and I agree wholeheartedly with the safety aspects noted above, but it never hurt either LOL

Thanks again - this board is the best!

Mike
