Lower Alternator bracket bolt 302
Anyone have any advice on getting the lower alternator bracket bolt back in? I pulled it out while replacing the alternator and now it won’t thread back in. Seems out of alignment or something. Threads are really gummed up with something brown/rusty colored. This is the long skinny bolt that bolts through either the water pump or the timing cover, not the shorter one that holds the alternator to the bracket.
After about 30 mins of trying I gave up to regroup. Ordered a long thread tap to clean out the gunk.

If the alternator has metal sleeves in the holes where the bolt goes through, knock these sleeves back to give you more wiggle room. The sleeves will move back in position once you start tightening the bolt.
