Hey guys, just recently got a 1994 IDI turbo with the E4OD 108k original miles. I pulled the dipstick tube to check the reading, but now I am having trouble getting it all the way back in. I can see the tube takes a winding route back to the transmission. Is there a trick to getting it back in all the way? It seems to go fine til the last few inches and then it doesn’t want to go, and I’m hesitant to try to force it.
No problem. Some of this old stuff is a bit quirky. If you're only used to new cars, you wouldn't think about stuff like this. Those of us used to these old rigs, don't even think about things like these anymore, we're so used to the quirks, we just flip a stick like this for example, without even realizing we're doing it.
Tip; You'll probably find the engine dipstick is just as quirky haha. Once you get used to it, it wont be quirky anymore. You'll just see it as charm.
Haha yeah, they can be quirky! My old 460 dipstick tube was weird to me at first too, but then I got used to it. I’m sure this truck will be the same. I’ve never had a diesel before, so I’m learning a lot!
RockAuto often has the right part at a decent price but watch the shipping as sometimes it gets ridiculous when they ship from multiple warehouses. Fewer and fewer parts available from Motorcraft but sometimes NOS on Ebay. NAPA is often way overpriced if you check around. AutoZone has a fantastic warranty so when possible I take advantage of that. Beware the "Motorcraft" ZD9 glow plugs on Ebay/Amazon as many seem to be counterfeit. Only use genuine Motorcraft glow plugs and thermostats but other than those I usually go with what's available. Personally, I like Donaldson oil filters but nothing wrong with OEM. Wix fuel filters--usually best price is online.
For IPs and injectors try Moose Diesel, Classic Diesel Designs, or R&D IDI performance. RussRepair.com has some other parts as well.
Do not trust Pensacola Diesel as many people have had bad experiences with their low-priced parts, especially the cheap IPs.
