I know some of you experts have a quick answer for this question. I have a 70 Ford 1/2 ton 302 three on the tree and my amp guage is not working. After tracing the harness from the dash through the firewall to a three prong connector right at or past the solenoid the three wires 1 blk with yl stripe, 1 yellow, and 1 red are in place and hooked up except for the red wire. The previous owner cut it loose and I can't find or tell where its suppose to go. Please help
Thanks
The red wire goes to a 4-amp inline fuse and then connects to the battery side of the starter solenoid with a ring lug. Don't get your hopes up, these factory ammeters hardly deflect at all.
Thanks Barry. Since I don't have that fuse link anymore can I just loop it back around to the battery side of the solenoid or do I need to buy a new fuse link or what?
You're welcome! Ah, now that's a problem. The fuse link is also the shunt that the ammeter is connected across. The shunt causes a slight voltage drop and that's what the ammeter reads. Without the fuse link (shunt), the ammeter won't read anything. How about some aftermarket gauges?
Thanks Barry. Aftermarket guages just might be the best way to go. The amp guage in mine is already fried and I was trying to use a aftermarket guage to replace the stock guage using the existing wiring. As you can tell I am no electrical wizard. Could the yellow wire be used since its already tied in place but where do I need to hook up the other side to?
Thanks
Yeah, you could if the aftermarket ammeter is a shunt type. You would put one end of the shunt on the battery side of the starter solenoid. The other side of the shunt would connect to the alternator output that originally went to the solenoid. The existing yellow wire is attached to the alternator output, the new wire needed would come off the battery side of the solenoid or you can fix the existing red wire and use it. I hope this makes sense.
Once again thanks. And yes what you just said makes sense. I may have some more questions later for you. But for now I think I will call it quits and get some sleep. Maybe tomorrow or after a few hours of sleep I can get back on this bad boy and finish up trying to put this harness back together.
Thanks
I'm running dual batts. and aftermarket guages oil, water temp,
and volts. When your battery is up the amp meter may only show alittle movement starting, or turning the lights. Aftermarket or not.
I replaced my aftermarket amp ga. with a aftermarket volt ga. and
wished, I did that the first time around. You will be much happier with a volt ga. You'll alway's know what your charging system is doing. Just ask these guys and they will tell you....My 2 cents

Thanks orich and mike.
I agree you can see what the heck is going on with a volt guage a whole lot better that with a amp guage.
Thanks for all the help
