I want to up size my panel box to atleast a 125amp main breaker from the 100 amp I have now. I phoned hydro and according to my address they think it has a 200 amp service to my house, they say they may have to come out to the house and look in that service box at the street to confirm this. so they told me to make sure it is accessable. so me being me I had to lift the lid and have a look. theres three big wires coming in red, black, white(alcan 4/0 AWG ALUM XLPE 600V may1988) and three smaller wires red, black, white, going to my house(alcan 1 AWG ALUM XLPE 600V april1989), my question is would this be a 200 amp service?
believe me I wouldn't play around with it, just curious if any one knew what amprage that wire was good for. I'm calling hydro this morning. thanks anyway

Your answer is there - even hydro can't tell for sure without having a look at the service box. Neither can anyone else.
I have had contractors sent out by Southern California Edison that screwed up the main service to our duplex, big time. You cant even trust the "experts" sometimes. 208v to 120v plugs can cause problems. They connected us to 3-phase instead of split-phase.
i believe code requires 4/0 alum for a 200 amp svc. and are you sure you have a 100 amp svc now? look on the handle of the main breaker in your panel. most will have the amp rating on the tip of it. # 1 alum is not rated for 200 amps. also dont know where you live, so you may have some local codes involved. check with your local electrical inspector. hope this helps

the reason hydro has to come out is because they changed their record keeping to a new system, and thier not sure if the info got transfered over properly so they want to be sure by physically looking at it. and of course I never told them I looked in there, but I'm sure if I told them what was written on those wires they would know what it is.
