I have a 1997 f350 with a 460 motor...the California truck has 357,000 miles on the odometer... so well worn... it has stalling issues at low speeds or at stoplights along with a check engine light on the dash... i ran a scan tool recently and it shows code P0320... i am assuming it to be a faulty PIP sensor in the distributor... i have replaced the ignition control module (ICM) recently on the driver's side fender ... i intend to replace the entire distributor for simplicity... any recommendations or comments are appreciated... thanks...
The ECU needs a crank signal and if it does not have one, then the engine does not run. If you don't have a stalling issue, I would look into what signal the ECU is looking for. I'm not certain if the engine has a separate crank sensor or if it's built into the distributor.
There is a misfire detector on your OBD-II trucks. It appears Code P0320 is triggered when two or more PIP pulses are detected. I believe you most likely have a failing PIP sensor (aka stator) inside the distributor or a bad connection.
My 1997 460 OBD 2 Ca. truck has a bronze gear on the distributor. Chances are yours may be the same. The bronze gear is a bear to get off. I did mine but only due to the low mileage.
Getting the oil pump shaft aligned is quite a task as well.
I hope this info helps.
I ordered a new Wai Global distributor from Rockauto... I was hoping for a Motorcraft branded... noticed a grease lube is recommended on the gearing prior to installation... found my Craftsman timing light from the 80's... appreciate the responses...
