Left front grind.

I was going to plow today and when I put the truck in 4 wheel drive (autolock hubs) the left front wheel started grinding.
Sounded like metal on metal disk brakes, but the brakes are good.
Any ideas? I need the truck to plow tomorrow and need a place to start and an idea of what to look for.
Thanks

My 90 did that as well. Capt. Mike does it do it when the shifter is in 2 wheel drive. Mine did it when in two wheel drive and i had to have the hubs replaced, so i went to manual. The auto hubs that were on my bronco wouldnt disengage, or fully engage, was stuck in between. It made a bad metal to metal grinding noise, almost like it was about to fall off.

In 2 wheel drive the truck is fine. No noise at all.
4 wheel sounds like the thing is tearing itself apart.

if its not the brakes, wheel bearing, or u-joint, then may be it the auto locking hubs? DW

Ok not to sound stupid, but i just had this happen to me. I had this metal to metal grinding noise coming from the front left as well. Then finally i hit something and it was the same sound. Not to sound like a smarta'' but it was my center piece on my wheel. The screws were loose and needed tightening, it stopped the grinding noise. Might wanna check that as well, it fooled me so it could be it.

do any of you think it could be the c-ring left off when the hubs were changed over?

Did you install the new C-ring that should have come with the kit?

Do you have the Warn Premiums? I just had a set installed when i was having the balljoints and front axle unis installed on my Bronco, and when I put it in 4wd this weekend when it snowed I got the same front-left grinding. I could actually feel it catch each time I shifted from forward to reverse. It was fully locked, I even unlocked/locked it a few times to see if something wasn't catching. Maybe Warn made a bad batch of hubs or something? I know I'm going to have mine checked out in the next couple weeks, the guy who installed them said he warrantied his work for life.

OK... Yes! YOU NEED THE C-RING! Thats what hold the hub mechanism in place. Without it in there, when you turn you hubs to lock them in, they wont turn in far enough to engage completely and will cause the grind. If you dont have it, go get it.
Try NAPA, or Autozone. Will only cost about a dollar. Now, if you do have all the rings and parts in, make sure there isn't alot of grease in the hub assembly. There isnt alot of friction in there. You only need the grease in the bearing area. If there is too much grease around the hub assembly, and being the return spring in there isnt all that strong to begin with, the grease can and will keep the hub from going in and fully engaging. If you need assistance as to the parts that should be in there...go here and enter your truck info. they will have pics.
