77 Freshen Up Thread

I accidentally bought a 1977 heavy half ton which I thought was pretty well sorted. I low balled it. I won. Wife pissed. I think my plan is to fluff it up a little bit and flip it.

The kids call it “ Tater”

My plan is to freshen up the interior and bolt on some upgrades.

400. Rebuilt with stock parts.

There’s a fair amount or corrosion. But mechanically it’s sound. Soft parts and suspension is okay. Exhaust is newish. The carb is an Amazon 2150. Stock 2bbl intake. Dual tanks. Electrical issues for sure.

I’ll post up progress on the rig periodically

Working on the door panels today. The current ones are original, cracked and pretty well faded. I am refurbishing these using.SEM Color Coat 1714. And a little clear

Nice looking truck for sure, good luck with the flip and getting out the dog house. Lol Since you do not like those mirrors, maybe some type 9's would bolt right back on in the existing nut plate holes? Interesting winged head dime on the Ford emblem, what year is it?

It’s a 1937 Liberty Dime. So I’m told.

Door check spring

Passenger door didn’t have a door Check spring. Thanks to Rich. I had an extra on the parts shelf. Installing these things can be a frustration so I figured I would show what I do.

The Check spring, if you can call the spring is all about opposing forces. So you need to very long screwdrivers 18 to 24 inches. Use a little tape to protect your paint on the door. Clip alongside of the Check spring in place with the door open. Positioning the short side of the spring, in my case on the passenger door it is on the bottom. It will be the top on the driver side. Use opposing forces to bend the short end of the check spring into place over the intended hole in the bracket. Tap it into place vertically with the other screwdriver handle.

The picture below attempts to show this set up for the passenger side.

It does now. It looks like a truck a fella can use as a truck and enjoy, for a really long time yet ... ... Dodge wheels and all.

Last night I received three boxes from our friend Gene Cochran. I had him refurbish three radio units. One Motorola unit (a mono radio from my other), and two stereo units. The radio I am replacing is a Kraco tape deck probably from the late 80s. The prior owner had the unit installed by cutting out the dash bezel so I ordered one of the new integrated dash bezels from DC.

I tried installing two different units and neither of them fit in the radio bracket. The face of the radio sticks out at an angle on the lower side of the face and prevents the dash bezel from fitting properly. I am pretty sure the radio bracket that I have is not original. And likely causing me some troubles.

I also cannot manage to get the heater controls on the correct side of the radio bracket despite having done it several times in other trucks.

No markings or Ford part numbers on the radio bracket so I’m assuming it is likely aftermarket from the Kraco install. I found a pretty affordable repop from the bronco garage. It should arrive next week. Hoping for better luck.

On the way out of the house today, I also received a box from SMS upholstery. They made some replacement bench seat covers for me using period accurate vinyl and fabric. I wasn’t expecting the seat covers for another month or two. I have not inspected them yet, but will post up some pictures later this weekend. I selected some fabric that had a definite 70s vibe to it.

The last bit of aesthetic fluffing up I’m going to do it for the bed. I ordered up some bed rails since the prior owner apparently had bed rails installed, and the paint is all sorts of jacked up. Some new bed rails will fit right in and cover up prior decisions. I also ordered up some wipe on clearcoat. I figured the bed worked about 40 years to look at this rusted so might as well keep the look.

Nice find. Although, the pickup is so shiny topside, it looks to already have been FLUFFED.

I need to source me a door clip, and keep forgetting each time I go to Pick-n-Pull.

For sure. It’s been well tended. Even the engine is sorted - rebuilt this year. The work I’m going is more polish than anything. It’s destined to be a garage queen, in my opinion. It’s nice getting some easy things done that make a big aesthetic difference.

So you ordered bed rail covers? Did you get Poppies for the wipe on clear?

Yes and yes. I ordered the bed rail covers from.TruckedUp. They have a set made for our trucks. And yes, I ordered Poppies wipe on. Apparently they are having fulfillment issues after the whole vice grip garage, sweepstakes debacle. I believe they are the same product with different branding. Anyway, I don’t expect to get the wipe on anytime soon. Which is fine considering the other little projects that rolled in in the past day or two.

Lots of packages came in over the past few days. Bed rails, bench cover, and a NOS cruise control unit.

Stainless steel bed rails. Not the greatest picture. I’ll pull it out of the garage this weekend.
