So I have a question I can’t seem to find an answer to anywhere on the interwebs. Most likely because of how I am asking the question. My 68 F100 has recently begun loosing brake fluid from the rear portion of the MC (Front Brakes). It’s clearly leaking out at the rear and being pulled into the brake booster. Is this a booster issue, MC issue, or both? Does the booster apply vacuum to the back of the MC all the time? I guess is if vacuum is being pulled some will leak by near the pay rod, but I’m getting a lot of vacuum. In fact with the MC cover off it’s clealry pulling a vacuum inside the MC and you can hear it. But power brakes seem to be working, until I run out of fluid. Is vacuum applied or present at the rear of the MC or do I need a booster and MC? I also and aware the booster will have to be cleaned to remove the fluid that has been pulled into the chamber.
Booster vacuum is applied inside the booster only. It allows atmospheric pressure to act on the diaphragm. So if you can hear vacuum on the outside of the booster housing on the mc side, you have a leak and need a new booster.
Your cylinder, if not leaking fluid, should be OK.
There are diagrams and videos on line that will show how it works. You can compare those to your actual setup to see how it all works and why you should not have a vacuum leak on the cylinder side.
If your MS is loosing fluid it's leaking. It's not uncommon for it to leak into the booster. But it's uncommon for the vacuum to draw the fluid out. I would replace both.
