DEF Tank alternative

2022 F250 long bed double cab 7.3 Godzilla. I had to see things go to waste. My truck has a filler tube and a tank for DEF. As I read the tank size is close to 8 gallons. I would like to use the tank for some non-potable water. I wonder what would happen and what code would be thrown if I modified the tank to hold water.

Seriously it has a def tank? They did away with the $2 underhood light but are putting def tanks on gassers?

How did a gas truck end up with a DEF tank???
And, if it is a gas truck, how would it throw a code, it couldn't be hooked to anything.
Are you thinking you would use the DEF pump in the tank for pumping water?
It is really made to be an injection type pump, to inject DEF into the exhaust pipe, not a very high volume pump.

I was told by a Ford factory line worker that it since MOST of the superduty that production year were diesel it was cheaper to build all the all LINE with the DEF filler port, tube and container etc. My truck is the XL trim. He also said that the body and accessory wiring harness is exactly the same for all trim levels. I found this to be true because even my XL level had the wiring harness for the automatic running boards. You are correct with your assumption, if it does have the DEF pump, albeit a low volume, just think how great it would be to be able to carry 8 gallons of water. Thay’s a LOT of water. I wish my friend at ford ws still with us so I could bounce this idea of him.

Back in my minor days we would fill the washer fluid bottle up with our favorite spirit and run the line in to the cab. Not that I'm suggesting that or anything 🤣

And you wouldn’t have to worry about it freezing 🙂

I believe that is a vent for the EVAP system

BS. No way they are outfitting gas trucks with diesel parts, especially parts like a tank. That isn't a filler tube for DEF, and that isn't a DEF cap. The DEF cap is blue for one. That tube you show is too small and it is too pliable and flattened in places. The filler hose to my DEF tank is more like a large heater hose in construction. And there are hundreds of posts on this forum alone with people trying to add Platinum accessories to their lower trim trucks, only to find the wiring harness doesn't have the required connectors for those devices. That line worker is full of it. There are likely some connectors found on every harness, regardless of trim level, but there is ZERO chance a Platinum harness is being installed in every XL truck. There may be a decision made to install one due to a temporary parts outage and they need to keep the line moving, but otherwise an XL truck gets an XL harness.

My FIL had a '22 with the 7.3 gas. It did NOT have a DEF tank, and the fuel tank part number for a gas truck is different than that for a diesel I'm pretty sure. That black cap is a vent cap, and that tube is a vent tube for emissions.

Your 'friend' who worked for Ford may not have known it, but he lied to you. He believed he knew things he did not. Having worked in GM factories years ago, that's pretty common for production employees to have misinformation that was passed around the shop floor.

Just curious, what would you use the 8 gallons of non-potable water for?

Do you have a picture of the DEF tank that you have on your truck?

And here we thought we were the only "smart" ones doing this!! OMG this made me laugh and remember the times! We'd cruise to Sonic and get a cup of the good ice, then sit in the cab and fill our drinks! We thought we were so coool! Even got a fresh gal. milk jug, rinsed it out and used it as the "reservoir"
