Here are the PCM pinout charts I made many years ago, the laptop I had most of this stuff on died so I had to go on a google search to find them. I don't think I ever compared the MAF truck to the SD truck directly because the thing to do back then was to swap in a Mustang PCM, but that was only possible in a truck with a non computer controlled transmission. If you were to do this all the wiring from the injectors to the computer would have to be replaced and you also need to add all the MAF meter wiring. None of the sequential wiring exists in an SD wiring harness and even the pins in the PCM connector are missing, so you need a complete MAF wiring harness to pull those from, and no it's also not a plug and play operation to swap in a complete engine harness because it is interconnected with the dash wiring.
As to the benefits of MAF vs SD, maf produces more consistent fueling across all cylinders but that doesn't necessarilly produce better fuel milage. Why? Fuel maps on most SD trucks are set fairly lean because trucks need all the help they can get, cars were given a lean cruise mode that kicked in after a certain time cruising at a consistent speed but truck computers never got that to my knowledge, I believe this was a major reason I was able to get some outstanding HWY milage from my MAF converted F150 that used a Mustang PCM.
Rememberer FMS had that 93-95 Lightning truck MAF kit that retained that E4OD. I can try to find pics of it, but I believe it used dual computers. Stock and the Mustang unit. Probably easy to sort if you have access to a 60 pin sandwich adapter
Mine and pal's MAF swaps both run MAF Fox Stang units, I think mine is a C3W1. Backup is the A9P.
Interesting the MAF units have DFCO. I did 17mpg freeway in mine freeway trips with the 4.10:1 gears and AOD, about 70mph cruise so 2300rpm area with my tires.
