7.3 E4OD problems

Hey all,
I have been having an issue I haven't seen specifically stated and was gathering opinions on the next step,
I got a 1997 F-250 HD, with the 7.3 and a 2wd E4OD
what's going on is recently i was driving back from a town about an hour away and noticed first gear was acting weird. It felt as if it let go of first and was taking a couple seconds to drop into second. I figured this because the RPM'S would raise on its own with the same throttle input, as if it was in neutral, Then it would catch second gear. O/D light was flashing prior and came back as a P1728, Cleared it and haven't had it come back since in about 50-75 miles or so.

My first thought was (and still is) be a clogged Trans filter and bad fluid as it isn't as dark cherry red as new fluid and the problem wouldn't arise until it was hot. But I know from researching a similar "Won't shift out of first until hot" with my Rangers A4LD that the E4OD has a solinoid pack that controls all shifts and T/C lock, Making me think its that because the 2-3 and the 3-4 shift still function just fine. And my T/C does still lock up, tested it with a Trailer brake controller and it unlocks when brake signal is applied.

And my apologies if this is long winded and everywhere, just listing what i know to give the most accurate info possible

Thanks for reading though and any help would be appreciated as i don't want to put this through a rebuild because supposedly it was 80k ago

If the trans filter is clogged, pull the trans out and replace or rebuild it. The only way that filter can clog is when the trans fails.

I've read and reread this line several times. What does it mean?

Im talking about the 1-2 shift solinoid, and IIRC its only a part of that solinoid block deal, and has to be replaced as a whole

The 1-2 shift solenoid won't make it feel like it's in neutral. A failing forward clutch can do that.
