Hello, my name is Mike and I am into Ford trucks. Just wanted to sign up for the forum because I have found it useful in the past and thought why the heck not. I have searched some on the forum for an answer to my question but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place or wording something incorrectly. I have a 1995 F150 4x4 with the M5R2 manual transmission. The shifter on the 1-2 shift fell into my lap basically, what i mean by that is the shifter over extended and was almost into the seat. I also could not get it to shift out of second gear. Managed to get it home and took off the top cover. The 1-2 rail was sticking out of the top cover and the ball detent was nowhere to be found. I fished around in the trans and pulled out the ball and spring, reassembled the top cover and I'm wondering what caused the rail to over extend/shift like that? The shift forks don't look like they have excessive wear on them. Is there something on the top cover, or the way the shift forks are cast that acts like a shift stop? Could I possibly have the wrong shift forks in the transmission? Someone has definitely been in it prior to me owning it. I replied to a post about this same thing but it was made years ago 2017. Any help/info would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
The plastic bushing in the shifter goes bad and there are kits to replace them. The shifter was very loose so I replaced the bushings. I have it had the same problem with my M5OD that you experienced. It could be what was already stated- someone was in there and didn’t reassemble it properly.
