Topper Brake Wiring?

96 F250 5.8 E40D.

Full-size (8') bed, 3rd brake light up top.

I found a green wire for the brakes (it's near the tow cluster, not the light.)

Questions:

1) Is there a preferred ground, or should I just find a place to drill a hole and mount a frame ground?

2) More important: physically, where to run the wires. Do I drill a hole? I'm not excited about that, hopefully there's a known place to run the wires?

Thank you in advance.

(And please, if you reply, be sure you're repling to one or more of the actual "Questions:" I'm asking.)

If you want it to function as a brake light only it has to be tied into the brake switch directly.. otherwise it will flash with one or the other turn signals.

What? No no, thanks but like I said, I found the wire for the brake. I'm looking for answers to the questions I wrote under "Questions:" if anyone has done this job.

Yes, obviously, but presumably the green brake wire that ford provided and labeled for this purpose (which I mention that I found in my OP) takes that into account, so not really relevant here.

That sounds logical since I have seen many trucks that are wired incorrectly causing the third brake light in a cap or some other aftermarket light (in a receiver hitch or light strip) to flash when it should only light up when the brakes are applied.

Here is the typical response from this member of “I do not accept this answer” and am still looking for someone to answer the question with the one that will reinforce what I already think is the correct way to do this.

Wire and plug already under the hood.
you just have to find the plug.
its pretty obvious, it’s labeled “CENTER HIGH MOUNT STOP LAMP FEED”

and it’s mounted to the inner fender well

I connected a wire directly to the frame. Clean it down to bare metal, bolt an "eye" to the frame and slather anti-seize over it to keep it from rusting. But any good ground will work

It's been a while and I'm not near the truck now, but what I remember doing is coming up through a tail light and maybe the rear stake pocket. I think I had to remove the tail light assembly for access, but I think I was able to run the wire through existing holes and ended up near the topper's rear window so it was a short run up to the brake light.

THANK YOU. I appreciate everyone who took time, but you're the only one who read the questions.

Okay, the ground is easy enough, and I hope I'll see a space to run the wire. The topper has wires running down to the drivers brake light area, so if I can find a hole in that brake light to go through, I should be fine. Thanks!

By any chance have you run 12V to your back? I'm going to attempt that too and wouldn't mind suggestions.

nah he was definitely asking about running a wire from the brake switch to the rear or how to get a stop only signal from the rear. the ground was just kinda an obvious to anyone lol. Ground it where everything else grounds there. the frame.

If he didnt block me id tell him he could get factory relays and use the charge wire already run to the back. so sad.

If you have 7-pin trailer plug with aux power, you already have 12v to the back.
