Do I Keep It?

Well, the time has come and we bought an Excursion replacement. Picked up a new 2024 Transit 350 AWD passenger two days ago. I was starting to get anxiety about my wife driving around with the kids in a 20 year old vehicle. We still have the Excursion and now that the van is in hand everyone in the family is upset at the idea of getting rid of the Ex, probably mostly sentimental in all honesty. Insurance isn’t cheap on the Ex and I don’t want to be sitting all the time, but I kind of have the same feelings about getting rid of it. How bad is it for a vehicle to sit for a few weeks, possibly a month, at a time without driving it? Is it better to set it free and let someone else tinker with it?

Not sure how old the kids are but it would make a good vehicle for one of them when they are able to drive.

There isn't much wrong with letting it sit. Just be sure to keep a battery tender on it and either start it up once a month or take it out every once in a while. If you know it's not going to get use, then pass it along. I will keep my 03 til the day I die, there's no replacement especially for an X.

Just look at all the old trucks still on the road or that have been restored, there's always a place and it's always good to have a backup. Here in CO you can adjust your insurance if it's not used. Saves a bunch of money on that expense.

Otherwise, everyone will get over it if it needs to be passed on to another owner. Wouldn't hurt to take the money from the sell and use it for something else or towards the transit, etc

The vehicle itself will be fine, but the 6.0 PSD does not tolerate neglect (like a simple low voltage during cranking can wreck a FICM). Personally I'd sell it ASAP as there will likely never be a time when its worth more than it is right now.

Personally, I would keep it, make it a point to drive it every other week or so, of course I'm not a good one to ask as I have 10 trucks

They don't make them anymore, and it never hurts to have another hauler!

You're asking a group of excursion enthusiasts if you should keep your excursion?

My son told me that my Excursion will never leave the Family.

it sits, more than it goes, but I do try to crank it up, and drive it around once a month, to keep the juices flowing where they should.

it is always on a Battery Tender, that PCM and VSM suck juice 24/7.

after a week off the juice, the volts are down to 12,3 or worse.

Don't forget to change the insurance coverage to only used for pleasure and not a daily driver. Will reduce the insurance cost a bit.

Personally I'd clean her up a bit and sell. I'm on my 3rd X though. If you aren't driving it, you are sinking probably around $600-1000 a year into it for insurance costs and just basic time based maintenance. Does that make fiscal sense? My 2005 X costs more to insure than my 2024 Expy does. If I wasn't daily driving it, I'd sell it in a heartbeat.

Sell it. Its just a vehicle. While they are somewhat unique, they are not exceptionally great or collectible. You should only 'love' things that can love you back.

I am getting ready to sell my 6.8L Excursion once my 6.0L is trustworthy. Then that one goes when the kids are gone since I'll have no use for both it and a truck.

Ha! Yes, good point. I guess I should have said "more trustworthy". You can never fully trust a 6.0L.

With 2 Excursions I wonder why I keep one, the diesel is my puller and the gasser is my runaround truck.

Keep it as a runaround truck,, 4x8 sheets of plywood fit in the back, it can swallow up furniture and stuff, keep the Transit in good shape, it is not truly as capable as the Ex.

I have two and I'd never sell either of them.

My 6.0 is the family wagon/pleasure/tow vehicle.

My 7.3 ended up becoming the work vehicle.

Both are dependable trucks that don't let me down. Do they occasionally need repairs, yes. Parts are cheap and plentiful compared to the newer trucks.

If you no longer need it, make sure it goes to a good home. Just make sure you're not like most folks in 2010: They saw newer trucks that had more bells and whistles and sold their Excursions and Super Duties for them with the promise of more from less. Several found out that even though Ford and GM said their 1/2 ton trucks could tow the same 10K their super duty and Excursion could, it didn't mean that it did it well. Several folks on this forum found themselves with Buyers AND Sellers Remorse after getting stuck with trucks couldn't work and play like their Super Duty or Excursion did.

I say cut the top, remove the doors, install a full cage and run 40's on the spare excursion.

Either that or sell it to one of us at a loss.

This,,,,this is the best idea ever in the history of ideas. Makes me want to go buy another Excursion just to do this. Make a vehicle that can bring the whole family rock bouncing,,,, sounds freaking awesome.
