I have the 2wd e40d starting to jerk in my 92 f350 dually and I was wondering if I would be better off getting it rebuilt or if I should just convert it to a zf5 planning on using to tow 8000 lb camper and daily driving
I should mention it has 220k miles and when towing that camper can't keep any speed at all going uphill if I start the hill at 65 I'll be going 30 before I crest it

That's a question only you can answer. Technically, you're not supposed to tow in OD with the ZF5 manual trans. You'll need a turbo if you're looking to maintain speed on the hills. That's not trans related. N/A + manual trans wont = faster uphill speeds.

I've looked into a ZF swap and it is tempting but it could get expensive depending on how you acquire the parts and/or if you rebuild the trans before installing. And a ZF won't make the truck any faster. My DD is a ZF w/4.10s an I like the combo but there's not much difference between winding out 3rd gear in the ZF as opposed to manually shifting the E4OD into 2nd and winding it out. Obviously with the auto you need to watch your fluid temp but there are a ton of add-on cooling options that are easy and affordable so that shouldn't be a deal breaker.
And as I pass what is likely the half-way point in my life, hopefully anyways, I have come to enjoy driving with one foot. Although I do enjoy feathering the clutch and that solid connection, but I also enjoy just driving and being able to panic stop without having to jam the clutch pedal too. Long legs and big feet don't make a manual setup any easier either--in my '92 I nearly hit the windshield wiper switch with every shift.
