Diesel leak

So I noticed my 6.9l was sputtering on startup. When I parked there was a good constant drip of diesel dripping from the back side of the engine. I don’t see anything obvious from the fuel rail lines. Thoughts on where to investigate?

There's a drain hole in the valley pan that drains towards the rear of the engine. A sputter on startup and the drip in that location, screams a failing return line - o-ring/ cap failure. Personally, I only use Delphi return line kits on my trucks (w/ Viton brown # 111 o-rings sold separately)........... But that's just the most likely place it's leaking fuel, not the only. Look for any place where you know fuel lines are and feel around for any wetness.

Amazing how the radiator can blow a leak at the front of the engine to make it come out the back lol. Anyway, the leak if pretty big coming from either this steel line or the hose connected to this…thing.

Confirmed leak is coming from this hose. Pretty sure that’s just a big hole behind the clamp. Is that the correct clamp type that’s on there?

that is the fuel lift pump. if the hose is leaking it may be old. that is supposed to be diesel rated fuel hose. and the clamp is fine, as long as it is tight.
that is the suction side, not the pressure side.

Double check your oil level. Since you have a leak at the lift pump hopefully it's just that hose. The mechanical lift pumps available at the auto parts store these days are trash and end up pumping diesel into the crankcase. It happened at least twice on my IDI before I decided to install a Duralift electric pump.

Does anyone know the size of this fuel line? 5/16? 3/8?

I believe the feed line should be 3/8.
Make sure there is some slack, or a full loop in that section so it can move with the engine and not stretch and rip off.

Good advice. There was definitely no slack on the old one.

On my '92 there was a full loop between the feed line and the lift pump, 3/8 hose. It was kind of a tight fit in terms of just enough room to make a full loop that won't kink.
