Custom Bed Frame 2x4s

Hello Everyone,

Do you think I should notch the 2x4 to make lay flatter of the chassis?

thanks

If you mess with the thickness of the bed mounting strips your fenders will not fit your running boards correctly. I am assuming this is a f2 or f3 bed.

I’m assuming you want to notch because the board is into the frame hump.

Could you just shift the board toward the rear and drill it off center?

Yes notch it. Any reason you are using wood instead of metal? It will make the wood weaker but not a big deal unless it is a large notch or you are loading heavy.

I would cut wedges to go under it and then glue and clamp them before drilling. Also should really be using treated or cedar.

Too answer some questions:

Why not metal? Just to save some money on buying reproduction cross pieces and not having to weld.

CCA or Cedar? It is what I had in the garage at the time. I also heard the CCA with not react great with the metal. I thought of getting oak but again trying to save some money.

Treated will react with aluminum, steel can have a reaction too over time but not like aluminum. Cedar would be a good option and isn't terribly expensive. Regular "white" wood will last about a year and then quickly rot and fall apart. For the purpose you are using it for, it would be a good idea to spend a little more so you dont have to rebuild it every 2 years. Just my 2 cents.

@red21sweep I look at any repairs/restoration/preservation for the long term. If you can do that with wood cheaper and better, good for you. If you do it cheaper and worse, don't do it.
