i went to set my bed on my frame and the frame rails are higher than the bed floor. im not sure how this os really suppose to fit.
i dont really want to raise the bed because i like the low look and how the fenders sit over the wheels. i thought about raising the bed floor a couple of inches. has anyone else ran into this prob. and what did you do. thanks
You got a picture? What you are saying is not possible with correct assembly. The crossmembers sit on the frame rails. (about 2 inches tall). Then 3/4" lumber on top of the crossmembers. Then the bed sits on top of the wood.
What part of that doesn't sound right for your truck?
Shawn; As Fenders said , The rear crossmember (2'x4"with L brackets) will dictate the height of the bed on the rails on the rear, and the front crossmember will do the same on the front. Some small adjustments can be acheived by adding or subtracting the rubber pads. When assembled correctly, the flange on the bottom of the bed sides will be aprox. 5/8" to 3/4" above the top of the rear crossmember and the same from the top of the front panel to the botton of the side flange. I do not understand how the running boards would fit correctly if your bed is not located in the right position.By the photos in your gallery ,the distance between the top of the fenders and the top of the bed looks correct. A few photos would help. Jim VA.
Just check'd my 56. I laid a 5/8 inch dia rod on the frame at the center of the rear end. I had 1/8 inch clearance between the rod and the flange on the bed this is with no shims add to the mounts.
I also measured from the top of the front of the bed to the body line that runs below the rear window and that was approx 6 1/2 inches.
If you haven't modified the top of the frame or "C" the whole section of the frame then setting above the wood seems odd, but whatever the case. I guess you will have to modify the frame to fit or like you said raise the floor. I have seen that done several times. Not sure how they did it.
doesnt the bed wood fit under the flange of the bed side or does it set on top of the flange it looks like on mine that the wood fits under the flange if so the frame will be to high if the wood sets on top i should be ok.
I just finished putting in my bed wood 4-5 weeks ago (54 f-100). The guys are telling you right. There are two cross members that are bolted only to the frame. Before the bed wood can be installed, you should be able to run a string line from the rear cross member, by the tailgate, to the top of the lip in the front of the bed. When everything is sitting right, the string should just touch the top of the two cross members, the top of the rear cross member, and that front edge of the front of the bed. If not, then it's time for rubber bushings. I think that perhaps you are thinking that the wood goes underneith the lip on the front of the bed. Actually, it sits on top! BTW, my new wood misses the hump in the frame by about 1/8". Good luck, John

I was out at KC Obsolete Parts, Inc yesterday and they have a metal strip similar to the standard bed strip that goes on top of the bed flange (like they do on a Chev). It covers any damage, rust ect and adds a finished look to the bed. On my 55 the bed flange and the bottom inch of the bed is pitted and the strip covers it up.
Hey UK, I think I did see this situation once now that I reread your original post. Did you have the front support installed on the front of the bed? It's about two inches high. Without that I am sure that the wood be setting on the rails. Good luck, John
