Front Differential Seal Leak

2000 F150 4.6 V8.
What's labour going to cost on a front differential seal leak ?
The leak is coming from the axle that connects to the front transfer case.
I went in for other work on the truck and asked him to take a look to see where the leak is coming from at the front end and he said: "front diff seal".
We never got into discussion on what parts are involved to fix this ....
Is it just the front diff seal ?
On roackauto I see only Timken makes one.

What parts am I looking at that I would need here?

Is it leaking form the pinion seal or the side of the diff housing? I think Ford still has the parts for that, I'd need a VIN to look them up but would also need to know for sure which seal it is.

The axle that connects to the front diff housing is leaking as it is covered in oil. I'll take a pic and post it.
But the front diff housing was not leaking at all.

The mechanic said: "Front Differential Main Seal".
Just got off the phone with them.
Says it's 2 hours labor at $125 an hour. $250 total.
Ridiculous!
The main seal is $10 on roackauto.

Leaking from the area I have circled? If so I'd pay the two hours happily before trying to do it myself.

Yes that's the area it leaks from, not from the front diff case.
It's a slow drip ...
Probably acted up when the 4x4 was used a couple months ago. Vehicle developed a slow drip after.
Now that the 4x4 is not used it's just tear drop leaks.
Very minimal amounts.
Upon closer lock we loosened the fill plug off the front diff and it had plenty oil.
Still needs to be fixed.

I see so many seals and bearings in that diagram you posted.
Yet roackauto only lists one as "differential front seal"

You're not paying them for what they do so much as you're paying them for what they know. If you think you can change it for less than 2hrs, go for it. Good luck.

4B413 is a bearing, 3C084 is the seal, 3A379 is a "shield". This should be the seal you need, https://parts.applefordwhitebearlake...al-2l1z3c084aa

My 2 cents
Probably going to need the axle housing too
The bearing gets loose and eats into the housing, destroying the seal in the process

I hear you.
Where's the link for the axle housing ?
Is the bearing likely trashed too?

I don't have a link for a housing
I'd just hit Ford or Ebay for the Ford / Spicer part
Yes, the bearing will be wiped out and that is what destroys the housing
If your bearing is good, you will have no movement of the flange, up and down, side to side
Those seals generally only leak if the bearing goes bad, and the seal then fails shortly after, that has been my experience anyway

Shoot me the last eight digits of your VIN, I'll see if it's even still available. It does look like a multi-part supersession.

So, the tube and inner bearing are discontinued but we still have access to the tube through our obsolete supplier. For anyone interested besides the OP it would be $576 for the new tube with seals and the outer bearing.
