I completed this project an awhile ago but figured I’d share the experience. My truck is a 2002 F-150 5.4L Super Crew. All of this happen after I made a wrong turn, shifted my truck into reverse and had a loud pop. I had lost reverse and second. After finding Transmission Bench on YouTube I decided to just rebuild it myself.
Here is the transmission removed
Started tear down to find the issue Common issues with the snap ring broken on Overdrive Servo This drive shell was the issue, weld broke on the inside
After finding the issue I called Jimmy from Transmission Bench to order parts. He is very knowledgeable and helps guide you with upgrades that will improve our worn transmissions. You can call him if you get into trouble during reassembly and even if something right not when back in your truck. I can’t say enough good things about him. When I received the parts Made my own tools to compress the piston for snap ring removal. Really need a work bench! All sub assemblies ready to be installed The kit included all of the molded rubber servo pistons. All of the ones in my transmission needed to be replaced due to the rubber being very hard. All reassembled and ready to reinstall in the truck.
I flushed the transmission cooler with 2 cans from autozone, then pumped transmission fluid through. There wasn’t a lot of metal in the pan like a bearing failure, the clutches looked like the new ones I installed. I have just over 20k miles on the truck since rebuild and I’m very happy with how it turned out
Right on brotha.
I’m in the process of deciding whether or not I want to rebuild and upgrade my 4r70 or gather all the extra parts to swap in a4r100.
did you do any upgrades while you’re in there? Just a simple rebuild.
Nothing performance wise, just some updated/upgraded parts from the Sonnex Sure Cure kit and a heavy duty separator plate. I had a mild built 700R4 before with a shift kit and corvette servo, I much prefer a factory shifts.
Tightened clearances have always changed shift quality for me on rebuilds for the better. Prob also a combo of hydraulic integrity back and better friction material too. I also always do mild shift kits to clean up the feel a touch, nothing harsh.

Excellent trans to learn on too, not too complex
Thank you! It was my first one I rebuilt, and was very straight forward. The shop I used to work at we either swapped a reman or sublet all the transmission rebuilds. It was a good experience to finally dive into one. After this experience I feel more confident in rebuilding a 4L60 for another project. I just wish I had a 5-6k spray cabinet to wash everything in! The cleaning was very tedious.
I bought a big foot press for the drums as I build enough autos, really useful tool!
Use the latest version of the 60E trans for your application. Sonnax's 3-4 backing plates are slick and the 65E style seven clutch direct works well with a high energy friction material. Wide band to fully grab the drum. VB is where you will have to incorporate Sonnax, Superior, and Transgo bits then tailor the shifts due to the band for second gear (well fourth too but diff scenario)

It too is simple, just subassemblies
That’s awesome! I will have to send you a PM when I go to order parts. The engine/trans I got is from a 2003 Tahoe. LM7 and 4L60E, paid $400 and got from fan clutch to tail shaft with the harness and PCM. Only got that good of a deal because I bought it from a friend of mine. Will be going in a 1977 K5 Blazer, used to have a 383 stroker and a built 700R4.
