This forum seems to be a bit more technically oriented so heres a crank question. In the case of a bad bearing, or the knock as a result of a bad bearing, would the knock be present at all rpm's?
I'm getting a chattering/knocking at around 2500 rpm's and have ruled out i believe pinging and timing issues. i'm familiar with the sound of pinging from timing and bad gas ect.... and this seems to be located in one area. I was thinking maybe the arm on the fuel pump maybe, or possibly something around the area of the oil filter. with the history of this engine, wich is completely stock, all the ingredients that would cause a bearing to go have been present. but if my memory serves me right, i seem to remember the knocking from a bad bearing being pretty obvious and knocking at any speed. Thanks in advance if anyone has any insight. With the exception of this one noise thats driving me crazy, the motor is dialed in about as good as an old stock motor can be.
Thanks
Well if it is the fuel pump causing the knock, there's one way to tell, go buy a $25 fuel pump and see if it goes away. A rod knock would be present at all rpms
Check for exhaust leaks.
I messed with a freakin exhaust leak for 2 months before I found it
It was making a weird sound and stuff, and I finally found it
#8 header bolts only had 1 in instead of 2... causing it to leak at a higher RPM
when my 390 was knocking BAD, i could tell it was coming from the top end in the head on the drivers side and when i recently pulled it apart i had founf the #7 intale valve seet had came out and was sitting there rattling around the valve, but this was a ver exsesive knock loud, but i dought thats whats wrong with yours and i dontt hink valve seets fall out very ofton either. good luck
Well I managed to listen to the noise coming from the pan while I had the thing up on a lift while it was idling. so I believe it's confirmed.......Now Do I just replace the bad one and not disturb the rest or is it better to just do them all while I have the pan off.
I don't want to get too fancy. The parts and labor I've put into it are already more than the truck is worth. this problem will not get better just worse if i don't get to it soon though. the parts are cheap enough. Is it recomended that All the bearings get done?
I know there are some close tolerances , I don't want to open up a can of worms.
yes while you have the pan off you just aswell replace all the bearings sense the one went there may be others not far behind, just aswell be safe than sorry, good luck.
my 360 had a timing sounding rattle at about 2500 rpm and it was because there were no cam bearings left. Just in case all your rods are ok after you start the teardown.
