I have a 1986 FORD F-150 351W AUTOMATIC and I want to know if SMITHY'S mufflers on a dual exhaust would sound good or even better than CHERRY BOMBS or the other no-name glasspacks. Is Smithy's the most famous and best sounding glasspacks out there? Is the longer the case of the muffler have an effect on how deep the tone will be? What about the diameter? Will this have effects too on sound? How much difference is the sound of a flowmaster 40 series compared to a SMITHY'S muffler? ANYBODY OUT THERER HAS OR HAVE EVER HAD SMITHY'S ON A FORD?
the shorter a glasspack is the louder. a smitty is a glasspack from like the 50's and 60's.a flowmaster sounds more deeper and better than the smitty imo.
depends on the turbo muffler. i have them on my 2.9l ranger. and they are pretty raspy, infact a bit loud, and i like loud. i have installed turbos that were quiter than the stock muffler. it depends on the case size, and internal demensions. smaller is louder, larger cases are going to be quieter. the loudest turbos out there are the raptors from flotech. they are 2.5 all the way through, and have a small case diameter. they are really nice when you are trying to keep the exhaust as high into the frame as possible..

went this morning to my local muffler shop and got a glasspack for 25 i think its magnaflow but they put the letters upsidedown(no matter). sounds real nice but i still have that disturbing noise that is think its a belt maybe but the glasspack made my truck sound younger
the reason they put the letters upside down is cuz they put the glasspack on backwards. that makes it flow straight through and not go through the louvers inside the tube

i had a 71swb f100 with a 300. it had no cats and i put a single in and out flowmaster and it sounded like a v8 pretty mutch. it did not vibrate anything.
I prefer the sound of a thrus glasspack there only a few dollars more than cherry bombs. I think a flowmaster is more of a car not a truck plus a glasspack will outlast any mufflar.
the flowmasters and most turbos really have a hard time with the egt heat produced by a truck that is towing. that is why alot of people convert to the glasspack. they have their goods and bads, sometimes a bit loud, but some people really like that. they are fairly cheap, and with the correct legnth and core diameter they can produce more power than even they best exhaust. hey the magnaflow and thrush mufflers were nothing more than a cross breed of a glass back and turbo.. a glasspack will not outlast most mufflers. they will blow out their packing very quick. i have a set of flows for over 5 years and no problems. glasspacks i have never seen them last 3 months
i sold my 440 ramcharger, and it had full length headers and glasspack. my father had the put on in 1988, and they were still on in when i sold it in 2001, and they were still in great shape. there is a major difference in glasspacks as well as in muffler. i would never use a cherry bomb. they were of a real low quility. thrushs are a mid line unit good for med to light duty..
how long were those on the ram charger. i have had more experience with 8 inch and 12 inch. they really don't last here. but those 18 and 24's, they seem to last a while. they are not as loud but they sound good.
the only glasspack i would ever run was at least 24"long. the ones on the ramcharger(saw her this morning, boy i miss her) are 36". the "blue streak" glass packs are great, and i have yet to have on fail on me. they are stainless in and out. ok the stainless isn't the greatest quality but i have yet to see a set rust up. i like to see a 2.25 core on a big block and 2" core on a small block. length is up to the buyer. longer has a nice deep tone, where a short one(24") will have a little rap to it. core diameter is crucial to picking one out. to large of a core and you might as well have straight pipes, to small of a core is like to short of a glass pack. it will blow out in no time. the pipes i have built for my 81 f150 460 project are running 2.25 and 30 inchs long. i don't expect to have to much trouble with the noise, even with headers.
